Recap Saturday's Meeting

Aloha Gardeners,

I hope everyone is excited about starting or continuing their gardens. Here is a summary of some of the ideas we discussed.

1. We will meet once a month as a group to visit someone's garden and/or have guest experts and learn about specific topics. That would be around the third week in September. Anyone want to volunteer their home for the next meeting and we show us your garden?-

2. Some of the topics we want to learn about are: composting, bug control, ... (help me out I can't remember them all)-We will get together in smaller groups to help each other get started between meetings. When you decide on a day you want to start your garden just email the group and some of us can come over to help.

3. If you want to make your soil according to the Square Foot Gardening guidelines you need about 1/3 vermiculite 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 compost (preferrable several kinds mixed together)

The best place to buy the vermiculite is at UAP (United Agriculture Products) in the Lihue Industrial Area, across the street and down a little from Rasco. You can also buy the Peat Moss there or at Home Depot. You can get compost from the Kauai Nursery or make your own or buy them in bags from Walmart, Home Depot ... If you want to coordinate with others we can get them all together.

4. Our first few goals are 1) find a place you want to put your garden 2) Decide what you want your garden to look like/be made of (raised wood frames, bricks, pots..) 3) Decide what you want to plant in your garden (from seed or transplants). Order seeds if necessary. UH Seed order link: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/seed/Downloads/Seed%20Order%20Form.pdf

***Shelley followed up about the compost bins from the County. Here is a link with info: http://www.kauai.gov/Government/Departments/PublicWorks/RecyclingPrograms/HomeComposting/tabid/116/Default.aspxIf someone decides on a time they want to go watch the video and get their bin let the others know by email and we can try to go at the same time.

Shelley said, "I'm so excited I'm heading out into the yard to find a good spot!"

I hope you are too.

Love, Kathy
